Mental health service was started as OPD service in Bir Hospital in 1961 for the first time in the country. Dr.Bishnu Prasad Sharma was the first psychiatrist to start Mental Health service after completing his higher studies from United Kingdom. Inpatient psychiatric unit with 5 beds capacity was started in Bir Hospital in 1965.Number of bed was increased to 12 in 1971. Mental health unit was upgraded as mental health department in 1984. The department was named as mental hospital and partially operated in a rented home at Naxal for about one year. It was planned to shift to a building of mission hospital situated at Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur but was tactfully shifted to Lagankhel as a mental hospital in 1985 and operated with 25 beds.The number of beds was increased to 50 in 2003. Oral Substitution Therapy was started in 1994 and phased out in 2002. It was again restarted in 2011. Telephone hotline service was started from July 1, 2010. Community mental health program was started from February 2010 in Dhading and Nuwakot.
