Responsibilities:
- Design graphics, illustrations, charts, maps, etc. to accompany news stories and features. Graphic designers create visual elements that help communicate and enhance the written content.
- Work closely with reporters, editors, and photographers to develop ideas and concepts for how to visualize stories. Collaborate on determining the best graphic approaches to take.
- Quickly design information graphics, tables, charts, maps, etc. to meet tight newsroom deadlines. Being able to turn around graphics quickly is crucial in fast-paced news environments.
- Keep up to date with current events and news to create appropriate and effective graphics about timely topics. Stay knowledgeable about subjects likely to be covered.
- Design graphics specifically for the web and adapt print graphics for online use. Consider how graphics will look on mobile vs desktop.
- Maintain the news organization's graphic standards and style guide. Ensure consistency across all visuals produced.
- Select compelling images, direct photo shoots, and edit photographs to use for news graphics. Images are a key visual component.
- Work with data journalists to visualize data-driven news stories in impactful graphical ways. Turn complex data into clear, engaging visuals.
- Continuously develop and hone visual storytelling skills. Use innovative approaches and techniques to create appealing, informative graphics.
- Keep abreast of current tools, trends, and technologies used in information design and data visualization. Incorporate new graphic types as appropriate.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge in graphic design, visual design, or a related field such as art or illustration. It is important to have training in design principles and familiarity with design software. (A degree is an asset)
- Proficiency in using design software like Adobe Creative Cloud, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. These tools should be utilized efficiently to create graphics
- Understanding of typography color theory, layout, and composition. It is crucial to know the aspects of design.
- The ability to visualize data, concepts, and narratives effectively. Strong skills in information design are necessary.
- Excellent storytelling abilities. Being able to transform stories into compelling graphics is essential.
- Conceptual skills for generating engaging graphics from scratch.
- Adaptability when it comes to modifying existing graphics or reworking visuals within deadlines. Flexibility is key in this regard.
- Familiarity with events news values and audience interests. Having an understanding of the context and environment is important.
- Writing and editing skills for crafting captions, labels, etc. with attention to detail.
- Project. Organizational skills for handling assignments simultaneously while working well under pressure.
- Teamwork and communication skills for collaboration with reporters, photographers and editors.
