Job Purpose: To support with a wide range of English as an Additional Language needs in their learning including in mainstream lessons with the potential to support some students who are already learners of English. Responsible to: Head of Additional Learning Needs Main Responsibilities: – Working under the direction/guidance of the Head of Additional learning Needs (and at times the English Department), to supervise and provide support for students with EAL needs to enable them to learn as effectively as possible on their own and in group situations, taking into account their specialist needs. – To support the students in the development of skills, e.g. (i) skills such as language, reading, writing, spelling (ii) encouragement of concentration, communication, sharing and other social skills, (iii) supporting their access to the curriculum through clarification and reinforcement of the subject matter. – To liaise closely with teachers and any external professional as appropriate to support the implementation of any special programmes or inclusion Plans designed for the students – To manage the EAL register and record information on Engage (school data platform). – To carry out initial and ongoing assessments of EAL learners, grade their ability according to agreed criteria and communicate the outcomes to all relevant stakeholders. – To monitor the students’ progress and report on any achievements or developments to contribute to the Annual Reviews of EIPs or EHC plans. – To identify opportunities for the students to work independently, where appropriate, ensuring their comfort and safety at all times; support other students in the classroom as appropriate. – To prepare suitable work for the students both independently and under the guidance of the teacher and to make or adapt resources to enable the students to access the learning activity at their appropriate level of understanding. – To establish a good relationship with parents/carers and to provide information and feedback where appropriate and agreed under the guidance of the teacher. – Where appropriate, to assist the teacher with the preparation oif the classroom for lessons. – To assist the students with physical needs as appropriate and agreed. – To encourage students to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher. – To provide support for the students’ emotional and social needs by encouraging and modelling positive behaviour in line with the School’s Behaviour Policy, and demonstrating high expectations of work and behaviour. – To be aware of an comply with the policies and procedures relating to Children Safeguarding, Health & Safety, security, confidentiality and Data Protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person – To assist with the supervision of students out of lesson time, as necessary for their safety – To accompany the students on school visits, trips and out of school activities as required. – To attend relevant meetings and participate in training opportunities and performance development as required. Skills required: – An understanding and knowledge of the needs of children with English as an Additional Language : Essential – Hard-working and dedicated to continuous improvement and communicating successes within and outside school. : Essential – Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all ‘stakeholders’, creating a harmonious and collaborative community. : Essential – Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, work on one’s own initiative and react appropriately to competing demands. : Essential – Ability to maintain confidentiality. : Essential – Ability to solve problems, make good, judgements and take decisions. : Essential – Awareness of TBS commitment to community work and willingness to contribute to TBS charities and community programmes. : Essential – Awareness of one’s own vulnerabilities and ‘knowledge gaps; with the mindset to seek feedback, self reflect, develop and improve. : Desirable – Understanding and knowledge of ICT and a willingness to further develop ICT skills. : Desirable Qualifications: – Recognisable teaching qualification and a good degree. : Essential – (TESL/TEFL/CELTA )or relevant certified. : Essential – Teacher qualification or teaching license : Essential Experience: – Experience of supporting students with EAL or ACN in the classroom to advance learning and development : Essential – Experience of differentiating learning activities : Essential – Experience of working with secondary age students and in a school environment : Desirable Personal attributes: – Enthusiastic, hard-working and resilient. : Essential – Calm, flexible, approachable attitude : Essential – Exhibit confidence with humility : Essential – Ability to work under pressure, on own initiative, accurately and with attention to detail. : Essential – A sense of humour with the right balance of gravitas. : Essential – Confidence to advise and challenge the Additional Learning Support Coordinator on all aspects relating of school life. : Essential Remuneration: TBS Salary Scale for nationals, dependent on qualification and experience.
